The Present Scott Albrecht

Scott Albrecht is a graphic design trained artist from Brooklyn. I just love his abstract typography work, especially the colorful pieces from the collection titled New Translations. The works are largely based in typography, meaning they contain words which are not clearly legible. At first you just think it is patterns, but then you realize you can see parts of words.

The specific woodworks are the result of an extensive process that starts with a hand-rendered drawing and requires hours of precision production work. Each piece is made up of dozens, sometimes hundreds of individual pieces that are cut, sanded, painted and re-assembled, often in varied depths.

Albrecht’s work in general incorporates elements of woodworking, hand-drawn typography, geometric collage, using vintage printed ephemera and found objects.

Strandbeest, the kinetic sculptures that move like animals

Strandbeest means ‘Beach Beasts’ in Dutch. Artist Theo Jansen has been occupied creating these new forms of ‘life’ since 1990. He constructs amazing kinetic sculptures/skeletons from plastic yellow tubes that appear to ‘walk’ on the wind. And they don’t use electricity!

The skeletons look like they are alive! They crawl, walk and basically mimic the movements of animals like a caterpillar or an elephant. The structures have parts that resemble to human muscles and nerves, which allow them to react and respond to surroundings.

If you happen to be in the Netherlands, Jansen’s next exhibition will be held at the Museum Prinsenhof Delft in November.

I wish I could personally experience this amazing installation in Lake Iseo, Italy by 81-year-old Bulgarian-American artist Christo, but unfortunately it was on until July 3rd. The artist created The Floating Piersa long walkway made of vivid yellow fabric on top of floating cubes. Visitors were able to experience this work of art by walking on it from Sulzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paolo. “Those who experienced The Floating Piers felt like they were walking on water – or perhaps the back of a whale,” said Christo.

Amazingly realistic body-painted animals

chameleon bodypainting by johannes stoetter

Is it a frog, or is it 5 humans painted to look like a frog? Look closely in these animal photographs, and you may notice that they are not actually animals, but humans in incredible body-paint. Inspired by nature, musician and body-painting artist Johannes Stoetter creates amazingly detailed paintings of animals on the bodies of living models. Each of these take up to 8 hours of work to complete, but also need up to 5 months of planning. Unbelievable.

Demystifying Beauty, an online Skillshare course

What do we mean by “beauty”? How can you bring beauty into your own work? Museum curators Ellen Lupton and Andrea Lipps take us for a 30-minute exploration on beauty, with this very interesting (and free) online Skillshare course, inspired by the recent exhibition Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial! Just had a quick preview at the course and it looks very inspiring. And it’s only half an hour. And it’s free.

By the way, Ellen Lupton is a writer, curator, and graphic designer all in one. She is a curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City and director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. So she knows what she is talking about…
