Love these exotically colorful screen-printed cards for “Khatulistiwa”, a travel consultancy business in Bali. They are designed by Jakarta-based agency The 1984. The name card is screen-printed in several alternating colors on very thick 500gsm paper. The edge coloring gives a great finishing touch.

Kafka’s words come to life with typography

This is the work of the award-winning design group Beetroot from Thessaloniki, for the opera production of “The Penal Colony” by Philip Glass and Franz Kafka. The director of the opera needed a design team to bring Kafka’s words to life and on stage, so, the designers from Beetroot decided to create the machine described in the book, out of Kafka’s text itself.

Beetroot explains: “Over the years we often return and explore the concept of typography as a ‘living entity; through various projects, which has led to some really interesting results both conceptually and visually. Interpreting Kafka’s machine as a literary device, we tried to elevate type from a mere decorating collection of characters to an actual performer, one that has the ability to torture and, ultimately, to kill.”

I am in love with this designer’s work! Bethan Gray, an award winning Welsh designer has influences from her Indian and Arabic origins and has created a fabulous new furniture collection, that was picked out in the recent London Design Festival.

A few pieces, like the Nizwa cabinet above with solid brass overlay, have been modeled after Omani architecture and was the result of her collaboration with an Iranian traditional craftsman. Gray has a love for detail, tactile textures, and luxurious materials such as semi-precious stones, marble, wood, and leather.
