Pin Pres is a playful shelving system designed by OOO My Design and handmade in Spain, that adapts to the shape of the items placed on it. Great idea for kids, it could actually make the act of cleaning up the room a playful experience! The obvious use would be for books, but I can imagine it also for storing wine bottles and maybe creating letters or words. Designed by Vanesa Moreno Serna and Nenad Katic, it comes in two sizes and 4 colors.

Kazoo magazine for strong and smart girls

cover kazoo

Now, this is something that combines my search for new and interesting ways to empower our young daughters to feel more confident of themselves, and also my love for design and lettering.

Kazoo is “a magazine for girls that inspires them to be strong, smart, fierce and, above all, true to themselves” as the creators say. In a time that TV and tablets are taking over the free time of young kids, it’s really encouraging to hear that a cool new magazine for girls aged 5-10 years is out. The founder, Erin Bried (a former magazine editor), thought of the concept out of the need to find a cool magazine for her daughter, that doesn’t only tell girls how to look or act. Bried launched Kazoo after a very successful Kickstarter campaign and the first issue was just printed this summer and is already sold out! All of their stories are either developed or inspired by top female artists, explorers, scientists, chefs, athletes, activists and writers. How inspiring is that for little girls?

Design wise for the first issue, Bried has used a selection of the best illustrators and letterers around. Mary Kate McDevitt has done all the lettering on the cover and some very nice lettering illustrations for inside. Illustrator and designer Libby Vander Ploeg has also created some beautifully illustrated maps. I can’t wait to look inside! I am thinking of subscribing for my daughters, but I will end up keeping the magazine for myself! Unfortunately the shipping costs from the US are too high, hopefully I will find a way!

Lyfe magnetic planters

Lyfe, gravitating, magnetic planter,

The makers of Flyte – the gravitating light bulbs – have launched a new exciting product: Lyfe! It’s a planter that hovers over a wooden base by magnetic levitation. “A zero-gravity growing system allowing you to cultivate your favorite plants in mid-air” as they describe it. Created by Simon Morris, the project successfully launched in Kickstarter in June and already reached its funding goal. Simply magic!

This is a fine example of the new age of souvenir shops, We Built This City is London’s alternative souvenir shop on popular Carnaby Street. Founder Alice Mayor, though that London is not all red buses, taxis and telephone boxes and that the city could do better concerning the souvenir scene. She imagined a store that would offer a more exciting selection of souvenirs than just kitsch Big Ben fridge magnets or Union Jack mugs.

Her first pop up shop on Carnaby Street showcased work by over 100 artists, illustrators and designers, thus supporting the local creative community. After the overwhelming success of the initial launch, the shop was invited back on the same street, where it has remained permanently. The online shop will be launched soon, meanwhile if you happen to be in London, check it out for great art prints, homeware and accessories.

ZigZag city guides for kids

ZigZag city guidesZigZag Paris city guide ZigZag Paris city guide cards ZigZag Paris city guide all

Meet Zig and Zag, the two characters from ZigZag, the new city guides for kids. They allow parents and kids to explore together with the help of a map of the city, 30 city cards filled with fun facts and activities, and a box to hold them in. Really great idea to keep the kids happy and entertained and at the same time, making learning fun.

Except from the beautiful guides of London , Paris and Rome, the rest  of the guides are for US cities. This  idea would be great for more European cities, but for the time being you can order online here.

The reopening of the Watergate Hotel

Sketch for Watergate hotel staff uniforms

The iconic Watergate Hotel in Washington DC just reopened after a nine-year renovation. The new design features luxurious interiors and humorous touches that pay homage to the hotel’s historic past:

Guest key cards say “No need to break in,” reminding us of the Watergate break-in scandal at the nearby office building that led to the resignation of president Nixon. Guests are also free to take the pens inscribed ‘Stolen from The Watergate Hotel’.

Lastly, most of the furniture throughout the hotel has been custom-made to look like it’s from the 1960s and the staff uniforms were created by the Emmy-winning Mad Men costume designer.

Uppercase & Flow magazines

UPPERCASE 29 magazine cover

Flow international cover

My latest obsessions are Uppercase and Flow. In the beginning of the year I decided to make a gift to myself and finally subscribe to these two magazines.

  • Uppercase is an independent quarterly magazine from Canada, founded by publisher, editor and designer Janine Vangool. Designed with great attention to detail, it covers almost all creative fields. Every issue has a different theme on either design, crafts, illustration or printing and has very little advertising since it is supported by subscriptions around the world. So much fresh talent and creativity to discover! Check out the current issue here. You can also find real gems in the past issues.
  • Flow on the other hand, comes from a big publishing group in the Netherlands (there is an English edition too) but hasn’t lost the personal touch and has a unique independent feel. It is, as the two founders say: “A magazine of unhurried time” “… all about positive psychology, mindfulness, creativity and the beauty of imperfection.”. Flow has a special love for paper: they always have a gift made of paper, they print on different types of paper and they even have a special edition for paper lovers, which is so good I don’t let my kids go near it. All issues have beautiful illustrations and great choice of vintage photography. Check out the current issue here.

Demystifying Beauty, an online Skillshare course

What do we mean by “beauty”? How can you bring beauty into your own work? Museum curators Ellen Lupton and Andrea Lipps take us for a 30-minute exploration on beauty, with this very interesting (and free) online Skillshare course, inspired by the recent exhibition Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial! Just had a quick preview at the course and it looks very inspiring. And it’s only half an hour. And it’s free.

By the way, Ellen Lupton is a writer, curator, and graphic designer all in one. She is a curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City and director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. So she knows what she is talking about…
