Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

Currently obsessed with this great children’s book: Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by authors Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. It’s packed with bedtime stories about the life of 100 extraordinary women from the past and the present, illustrated by sixty female artists from all over the world. Each woman’s story is written in the style of a fairy tale. Each story has a full page, full color portrait that captures the spirit of the portrayed hero. Favilli and Cavallo launched their Kickstarter in March with the goal of making $40,000, and printing their first 1,000 copies and eventually reached more than $600,000!

Also, love the lettering cover! A great “anti-princess” storybook that inspires our girls to dream big!

A straightforward work contract

“You give me money, I’ll give you creative.
I’ll start when the check clears.
Time is money. More time is more money.
I’ll listen to you. You listen to me.
You tell me what you want, I’ll tell you what you need.
You want me to be on time, I want you to be on time.
What you use is yours, what you don’t is mine.
I can’t give you stuff I don’t own.
I’ll try not to be an ass, you should do the same.
If you want something that’s been done before, use that.

PRO BONO

If you want your way, you have to pay.
If you don’t pay, I have final say.

Let’s create something great together.”

This is actually a work contract for a design firm in Chicago. So straightforward and simple!

Japanese manhole covers are beautiful

In Japan, manhole covers don’t have to be ugly. Japanese sewer lids can be beautiful, intricate examples of urban design, with references to local sights, traditional printmaking, history, architecture and pop culture . The above images are part of a photographic project by S. Morita, who has recorded over a thousand manhole covers around Japan over the years.

So don’t forget, next time you are in Japan, look down..!

Trump Wave illustration

I just love this Illustration called “Trump Wave”! Created by A. Richard Allen for The Sunday Telegraph Money section, it won the Best Editorial Illustration and is also the overall winner for this year’s V&A Illustration Awards. The illustration, referencing to Hokusai’s iconic painting “Great Wave off Kanazawa”,  addresses the two most pressing political concerns of our time – migration and the Trump presidency.
